Trauma

Do you experience one or more of the following?

Feeling triggers that leave you feeling overwhelmed, shaky, and anxious (or shutdown and helpless)
A tendency to withdraw or isolate yourself
Rely upon alcohol, substances, or behaviours to avoid feeling emotional discomfort
Feeling hyper-aware or on your guard
Having difficulty remembering broad periods of your life
Feeling numb and cut off from your emotions
Feeling ashamed, guilty or unworthy
Feeling disconnected from other people
Feeling as if there something wrong with you
Having a hard time trusting other people

How counselling can help:

Trauma, whether it be described as ‘big T’ e.g. sexual abuse, neglect, or ‘little T’ e.g. bullying, parental break-up, is often characterised by historical events continuing to have a disproportionate impact on life in the present day.

Counselling can help by helping you make sense of these past events and how you found ways of coping with and surviving these events, whilst also exploring what legacy has been left in terms of the assumptions and beliefs being held by parts of you in the here-and-now.

How you responded to past trauma may have worked very well for you back then, but continuing to respond in the same way now, as if the trauma is still present, may be taking its toll on you and be serving as an obstacle to you leading the life you want for yourself.

Counselling can also help in the ‘re-processing’ of past memories e.g. using EMDR so that these memories transform into something relatively benign, taking their place in your personal history but without the associated pain and distress they have been characterised with to date.
